RABBI RANK’S COURSES

WINTER & SPRING OFFERINGS

ALL YEAR LONG CLASSES

INDEPENDENT STUDY

How would you like to learn how to lead Ma’ariv, the evening service, or Minhah, the afternoon service, or some portion of the morning service, like Birkhot haShahar or Pesukei Dezimra?  Now is your chance to study one-on-one with Rabbi Rank.  The prayers are available in the mp3 format so you can download them onto your computer or cellphone.  Rabbi Rank will set up a meeting regimen tailored to fit your schedule.  This is such an easy way to upgrade your synagogue skills.  Just e-mail Rabbi Rank at [email protected] and you can get started as early as this September.

TALMUD: MASEKHET KETUBOT—FORGET “DO YOU LOVE ME?”  DO YOU TRUST ME!!

A masekhet is a tractate and ketubot are wedding contracts.  This class deals with the very sensitive subject of husbands, wives, and what that relationship means, emotionally, psychologically, and financially.  Masekhet Ketubot is known as “Shas Katan” or the little Talmud because so many of its principles are the principles upon which the rest of the Talmud is based.  But actually, this course deals with the predicaments around which so much of our lives revolve—trust, deceit, power, submission, authority, truth, etc.—and all of it stems from discussion on the pages of this very fine Talmudic tractate.  You don’t need to know Hebrew and the discussions, in English of course, are both profound and entertaining, and always lively.

JEWISH MEDITATION:  WE PUT THE OHM INTO SHALOM

Scientific research has verified repeatedly the positive effects of turning down the body for a few minutes each day.  Meditation lowers heart rate, reduces blood pressure, eases tension, and clears the mind.  This class is open to everyone, and you don’t even have to be Jewish.  But our mantras always are, and are chosen based on the season and the Torah readings.  Come do yourself a tovah (a good thing) and treat yourself to a few minutes of inspiration and relaxatioin.  It will make the rest of the day so much better!

COOKIES, COFFEE AND CONVERSATION

Rabbi Rank is creating a series of essays on the meaning and challenges of maintaining one’s Jewish identity in America.  Prior to each Cookies, Coffee, and Conversation, the topic of the evening will be announced.  Rabbi Rank will be prepared to read the essay to all those gathered, and with a plate of cookies and a warm cup of coffee in hand, hope to generate some reflective conversation about the evening’s topic.
