Our Philosophy

Midway Jewish Center is proud to be associated with the Conservative Jewish Movement.  By so aligning ourselves with Conservative Judaism, we place a premium on making sure people understand the meaning behind Jewish ritual and prayer, we welcome women to participate within our services on an equal basis with the men, and we welcome all Jews, no matter what their backgrounds, no matter what their sexual orientation, to become part of a loving and welcoming community.  We believe that there is no such thing as a "stupid question."  All questions are important and are answered with the respect and dignity that such inquiries deserve.  We meet people where they are and encourage them to grow deeper into their Jewish identities as their own Jewishness evolves over time. All our schools operate like this, from our pre-school through Adult Education.

There are no subjects foreign to the Conservative Jewish soul, and we respect the wisdom of our Jewish teachings, trying our best to impart them with a modern accent.  At Midway, you will hear references to Bible, Mishnah, Talmud, Gemara, Midrash, history, philosophy, and rituals.  You will hear a lot of Hebrew , too, it being the language of our people, but always with an eye toward understanding what we are saying.  We have people learning how to chant Torah, while others delve into the mysteries of Jewish theology.

The rabbis will be open to your questions and comments.  Of all the mitzvot, Talmud Torah, the study of Torah is the most important.  We take that seriously at Midway, and you'll love your new found knowledge the more you get involved.
